Buying Property in the Hilo Area
(our experiences)
Enough
people staying in our home have asked us about buying property in
Hawaii that we decided to share our experiences. If you are serious
and can afford it - now is the time to buy.
After
many vacations on the Islands we decided we wanted to retire in East
Hawaii so in 2002 (during a down real estate market) we purchased an
empty one acre lot in HPP (Hawaiian Paradise Park). Our intention
was to build a home when we retired in 2013 or so.
Now
fast forward to 2009 and the values of homes have plummeted across
the country. So before our annual vacation to the Hilo\Puna area in
the summer of 2009 we thought we would see what might be available
in our price range. This eventually led us to Evan Clarke who I
spoke with on the phone. I told him our price range and desired
locations. Then over a period of a few months Evan sent us several
emails with links to homes for sale that met our criteria. With his
help we were able to arrange several walkthroughs before we arrived.
The walkthroughs helped us realize it was going to be cheaper to buy
now then to build later which is exactly what we did. Plus we ended
up closer to the ocean then we thought we could ever hope to afford.
Evan
also did an excellent job in helping us quickly sell the empty lot
we had bought in 2002 by having us price it properly.
Evan Clarke, RA is a real estate agent we highly recommend. He
was always straight forward with us and very informative.
